Frequently asked questions
Do I really need business liability insurance?
If you operate as anything other than a sole proprietor with no assets, yes. Business liability covers you if a customer slips and falls in your store, if a product you sell injures someone, or if a client sues over your work. Without it, your personal assets could be at risk. Most landlords also require it for commercial space.
What's the difference between general liability and professional liability?
General liability covers accidents and injuries (slip and fall, property damage, advertising injury). Professional liability (also called Errors & Omissions or E&O) covers negligence in professional services โ like if an accountant makes a mistake on a client's taxes, or a web developer's code crashes and costs the client money. Freelancers and consultants should strongly consider E&O.
Is workers' compensation required?
Yes โ workers' comp is legally required for businesses with employees in every state except Texas. It covers medical expenses and lost wages for employees injured on the job. Rates vary dramatically by industry (construction is expensive, tech is cheap). You can't skip it even if you have 'at-will' employees.
